Newsom’s Explosive Attack: Vance ‘More Dangerous’ Than Trump?

California Governor Gavin Newsom is calling Vice President J.D. Vance “a unique fraud and phony” who may be more dangerous than Donald Trump himself — but the evidence behind that claim tells a more complicated story.

Quick Take

  • Newsom publicly declared Vance “a little more dangerous than Trump,” calling him a fraud who adopted Trumpism opportunistically rather than authentically.
  • Vance responded by leaning directly into core Trump-era themes — immigration enforcement, anti-sanctuary-city rhetoric, and accusations that California officials encouraged riots.
  • Trump publicly praised Vance’s leadership after Newsom’s attacks, reinforcing Vance’s standing within the movement rather than distancing himself from his vice president.
  • Early 2028 polling shows Vance trailing both Kamala Harris and Newsom by significant margins, raising real questions about his ability to carry the movement independently.

Newsom’s Broadside and What’s Behind It

During a recent media appearance, Newsom said of Vance: “Talk about a guy who put a mask on and his face grew into it.” He called Vance “a unique fraud and phony” and argued that both Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio “went from being some of Trump’s most effective critics to being his closest allies.” The attack is pointed, but it’s worth noting that Newsom is a prominent Democrat with his own 2028 ambitions — making his critique as much political positioning as neutral analysis.

Newsom also took a shot at Vance on social media after Vance visited Disneyland while Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids were underway in Southern California, posting: “Hope you enjoy your family time @JDVance. The families you’re tearing apart certainly won’t.” The exchange drew national attention and illustrated how the two men have become the most visible proxies in the broader culture war battle between California progressivism and Trump-era conservatism.

Vance Fires Back With Trumpist Playbook

Vance did not retreat from the confrontation. During his Los Angeles visit, he accused local officials of having “actively encouraged illegal migration,” described sanctuary city policy as meaning “it is open season on federal law enforcement,” and charged that Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass were “encouraging violence and rioting” in response to the immigration enforcement actions. The rhetoric maps directly onto established Trump-movement themes — anti-elite, anti-sanctuary, and law-and-order framing that energizes the Republican base.

Trump, asked about Newsom’s criticism of Vance, publicly praised his vice president’s leadership rather than distancing himself from the controversy. That public validation matters in a movement still largely organized around Trump’s personal brand. For now, Vance is not operating independently of Trump — he is operating as Trump’s most visible enforcer, which is precisely the role the administration wants him in.

The Succession Question Nobody Can Yet Answer

The deeper issue beneath all the insults and media volleys is whether Vance can sustain Trumpism on his own once Trump is no longer on the ballot. The honest answer is that the available evidence does not settle the question either way. Vance clearly performs the movement’s themes with conviction. But performing a movement and leading one are different things. Early polling from a Public Sentiment Institute survey shows Vance trailing Newsom by six points and trailing Kamala Harris by eight points in hypothetical 2028 matchups — suggesting real electoral vulnerability.

What both sides of the political spectrum can agree on is this: the Newsom-Vance clash is less about governance and more about positioning for 2028. Newsom wants to be seen as the Democrat who took on Trumpism directly. Vance wants to be seen as the man who carried it forward. Meanwhile, millions of Americans on both the left and right remain frustrated that their leaders seem more focused on winning the next election than on solving the problems — inflation, immigration chaos, crumbling infrastructure, and a hollowed-out middle class — that are making daily life harder. The political theater is loud. The policy results remain thin.

  1. If you want me to believe the Newsome and or Harris are leading in poles over Vance it better be more than a partisan political pole. The demorats have no plan to lead and steer this country other to change processes and not policy! Tax and spend is not a plan. Socialism is not a plan that works in a Capitalistic government.

  2. Just the fact that democrats are already pushing 2 1/2 years ahead of the next presidential election screams of desperation. Polls this far out are about as useful as tits on a bull.
