Newsom’s 2028 Path BLOCKED—Harris Won’t Step Aside

California Governor Gavin Newsom faces a major obstacle in his 2028 presidential ambitions: former Vice President Kamala Harris refuses to exit the race, and the Democratic Party’s most loyal voting bloc stands firmly behind her.

Black Women Voters Create Roadblock

Harris recently signaled her intent to run for president in 2028, despite her failed 2024 campaign against Donald Trump. While many Democratic insiders consider her damaged goods after losing every swing state, she maintains overwhelming support among black women voters. A Washington Post exit poll found Harris received over 92 percent of black female votes in 2024, even higher than Biden’s support from this demographic. This voting bloc represents the most loyal segment of the Democratic base, making it politically impossible for Newsom to challenge Harris directly.

Donor Class Shows Hesitation

The Los Angeles Times contacted over two dozen top donors to the largest pro-Harris super PAC from 2024. Several donors stated they will not support another Harris campaign, while others declined to comment or did not respond. Despite this donor reluctance, Harris performed exceptionally well among black male voters compared to typical Democratic candidates. Donald Trump captured 20 percent of black male votes, yet Harris still maintained strong overall support within the black community.

Newsom’s Strategic Dilemma

Newsom previously avoided challenging Biden for the 2024 nomination, knowing black female voters would view a white male pushing aside the potential first black female president as both sexist and racist. Now he faces the identical calculation for 2028. Sophia A. Nelson, writing in TheGrio, defended Harris against criticism of her communication style as attacks rooted in racism and sexism. Nelson, an Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority sister of Harris, argued black women serve as the Democratic Party’s foundation yet receive minimal recognition or respect for their loyalty.

What This Means

Newsom must decide whether to challenge Harris and risk alienating the Democratic Party’s most reliable voters, or wait until 2032 for another opportunity. Harris’s 2024 performance showed weakness among nearly every demographic except black women, but that single group wields enormous influence within Democratic primaries. Any Democratic candidate who attempts to sideline Harris faces accusations of discrimination from this critical voting bloc, creating a political minefield that could destroy their national ambitions before the campaign begins.
