When crime is not taken seriously or handled appropriately by law enforcement, the negative impacts of this tend to ripple out in society very quickly. Contrary to popular belief, the appropriate handling of crime extends far beyond just the police.
Police officers can make as many arrests as they want. Though if prosecutors refuse to bring charges and if judges give them a slap on the wrist, then criminals will ultimately still get away with what they’re doing.
In America, the rise of crime has been a problem in this country for quite some time. Sadly, it’s a problem that seems to be growing in magnitude, rather than declining.
One of the latest casualties of unchecked crime is now a teenage girl who just recently lost both of her legs, per Conservative Review.
What Exactly Happened?
Daniel Riley, 21, hit teenage girl Janae Edmondson after running a sign ordering him to yield. However, Riley never should have been driving or out and about in the first place.
As it turns out, in August 2020, Riley was hit with armed criminal action and robbery charges. During the time the 21-year-old hit the teenage girl on the road, he was out on bond. Had he not been given the option of bond, Edmondson would have avoided being injured.

Sadly, her injuries were so severe that doctors had to amputate both of her legs. After driving at 45 miles per hour, Riley’s totaling of the teenage girl led to him getting hit with new charges of driving without a valid license, assault, and armed criminal action.
Edmondson’s family and others who know her remain devastated about what happened to her.
When Does It End?
Social media users have pointed out that what occurred to this teenage girl is a byproduct of officials not taking tough enough action on crime.
Right now, Edmondson’s life will be forever altered because of the incident on the road that was totally avoidable. Incidents like this are what Republicans have warned about when they stressed the need to not let criminals off the hook.

Sadly, until more communities across the country start upholding law and order (and not letting violators of the law dodge accountability), more innocent people are going to keep paying the price for it.
Given the light treatment that Riley faced amid the prior charges against him, it remains to be seen whether or not the system will truly hold him responsible this time around.
