This past weekend, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) asserted the American people would “revolt” if the United States Supreme Court continued striking down new gun control laws.
The Connecticut senator made those remarks in an interview with NBC’s Chuck Todd on a May 14 morning broadcast of “Meet the Press.” Throughout the interview, Murphy attacked the highest court in the land and even questioned its very legitimacy.

A Closer Look at His Remarks
Murphy cited the 2022 New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen decision where the Supreme Court — in a 6-3 majority — overturned the New York state government’s restrictions on concealed carry.
This came in addition to the recent decision from Virginia District Court Judge Robert Payne.
In the most recent case, Payne ruled that a prohibition on gun sales for 18 to 20-year-old individuals would effectively enact restrictions on certain citizens that “do not live with further constitutional promises.”

Murphy was particularly incensed by how the courts have gradually undermined state governments’ ability to impose gun control measures.
The Connecticut senator declared, “If the Supreme Court ultimately declares that states or Congress can’t pass universal background checks or can’t take these assault weapons off the streets, I think there’s going to be a widespread rebellion over that policy.”
More Criticism of the Supreme Court
The Connecticut senator continued unloading on the Supreme Court. “A court that’s already rather illegitimate is going to be in full crisis mode.”
He vowed state legislatures would continue to “control who possesses weapons and what style of weapons are held.” Murphy believes this will transpire, irrespective of the level of resistance from the courts.
“We split a 30-year logjam last year by passing the first significant gun safety initiative. I think our movement is in a position to win,” Murphy said to Todd during the May 14 broadcast.
